This year we are trying to have a very handmade Christmas. The great thing about that is that that means I will be making a lot of the gifts I'll be giving out. The not so great thing is that I won't be able to show any of them here because most of the recipients read this blog. I'm still trying to figure out how to get around that, so if you have any ideas I would love to know!
In the meantime I thought it would be fun to share with you all one of our favorite family Christmas traditions. The Advent Calendar. I blogged about it last year, and you can read that post here, but this year I will be taking you day by day through our activities. I hope this will inspire you to start this tradition with your family! Of course, as I will be doing this as it happens, the posts may be a day behind. I'll try to keep up and current though.
So, yesterday the kids started the Advent season off with this;
Each year we add one building to our Christmas village. We try to pick something that has meaning to us. Something that maybe represented the year as a whole. This year, we found the perfect addition immediately!
We, as a family, have been talking about opening a Pie Shop since the middle of summer. Sometimes we were serious about it. Other times it was just a fun dream. Either way, Pie Shops hold a special place in our hearts. Thanks, in large part, to the funtastically unique, artistically brilliant show whose life was unfairly cut short because of the Writers Guild strike, Pushing Daisies. The death of that series is still felt throughout our home. Or at least in my head it is. I still haven't been able to bring myself to watch the DVDs. It's too painful. The wound too fresh, too deep. It's totally normal to feel this way about a television show, right? Right?
Anyway! When we saw the Pie Shop, we knew right away that it was meant for our village. It looks so cozy nestled in among our slowly growing village, don't you think?
